I carve traditional hunting decoys.  In New Jersey there are two types of decoy’s Coastal Bay style and Delaware River style.  I carve mostly Barnegat Bay style decoy’s all though I have carved some Delaware River Style decoys.  The decoys are hollow and weighted with lead on the bottom, to make them float right on the water.  Barnegat Bay style decoys have a round bottom; mine have a leather tab for the decoy line and a brass tag identifying the maker.

Cedar is the choice of wood, because it’s light and holds up well in salt water.  They are painted in oils, and most have glass eyes.  In Barnegat Bay Brant, Black ducks, and Broadbills are the most popular species.  Mergansers, Buffleheads, Widgeon, Mallards, Canvasbacks and Redheads are also carved.  I pride myself making affordable working decoys, for those who like to hunt with traditional working decoys.

My dad and myself will have an article about us, in the Jan Feb 2009 issue of Decoy Magazine.  I have carved many gunning rigs for hunters as well as a few for local Ducks Unlimited chapters.  If you are looking for working decoys for hunting or the shelf you will be happy with mine.  You can contact me at genedeeks@aol.com or 609-971-0113.
